Sexual function is a complex process involving brain, hormones, emotions, nerves, muscles, blood vessels and is very\nsensitive to stress. Therefore, stressful lifestyle usually induces sexual dysfunction. Recent studies reported that chronic physical\nand psychological stresses modulate neurotransmission in the median pre-optic area and decrease penile blood flow, resulting\nin erectile dysfunction. It also reported that activation of hypothalmo-pitutary-adrenal (HPA) axis leads to enhancement of\nplasma cortisol levels and increase sympathetic system function, this leads to excessive oxidative stress and stress related\ndisorders including sexual dysfunction. Curcuma amada renowned plant in ayurveda system of medicines used asaphrodisiac,\nappetizer, diuretic, asthma and in bronchitis. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of Curcuma amada on stress\nmodulated sexual disorder in male mice. Male wistar mice weighing between 20-25 gm were divided into 5 groups (n=6). Group\n1: Normal control received distilled water 1 ml/kg (without stress). Group 2: Stress control received water 1 ml/kg. Group 3:\nReceived standard drug sildenafil citrate 5 mg/kg p.o. Group 4: Received low dose of hydro-alcoholic extract of Curcuma amada\np.o. (LDCA 100 mg/kg). Group 5: Received high dose of hydro-alcoholic extract of Curcuma amada p.o. (HDCA 200 mg/kg). All\nthe treatments were given for 28 consecutive days before immobilization stress (IMB stress). During stress induction water and\nfood were withdrawn for 6 hrs in a day. Exposure to IMB stress for 28 days continuously increases MDA and cortisone,\ndecreases GSH levels, sperm density and alters histology of testes. This may be due to generation of reactive oxygen species in\nrat testes, treatment with Curcuma amada, rhizomes have decreased MDA and cortisone level, increased GSH, sperm density and\nfurther it has restored histoarticulture of testes. This activity may be due to its potential antioxidant activity and due to presence\nof phytochemical constituents like glycosides, saponins and flavonoids in extract.
